Learn to react

Reacting to what the opponent does is an important part of any strategy game. Although at the higher levels, reacting can be a complex, nuanced and subtle technique, there are things you can keep your eye out for even at the D- level.
A key moment in every matchup is when your opponent expands. There are 3 ways to react to this, depending on matchup and situation: get higher tech and do something with it (harass, attack, assert map control), put down additional production

Practice against the computer

It's also a convenient way to try out new maps in order to become accustomed with the general layout: choke points, high ground, ramps, expansions, etc. All in all, the computer can be a practice partner which can help you lay down the basics, but it is not a substitute for human opponents, even at this level.

Mid game and late game management

Usually, a build order ends just as the midgame begins. Some build orders continue well into the midgame, but generally, once you get into the midgame you are more or less on your own. Still, you need to have a general idea of what you have to do, so I recommend the Liquipedia matchup guides once again.
Expanding is an important part of any matchup, so it's only normal it should be one of your primary goals. Even if it may appear that you have a lot of

It is imperative to know what to do in a game of Starcraft, especially in the beginning. The opening you choose might make the difference between going into the midgame with a solid advantage, or losing the game altogether. Like in chess, each Starcraft matchup has standard openings, which have been explored and perfected throughout the years.
A build order consists of the succession in which you build your structures and get your units early on. Some say the build order itself ends when

As you may have noticed, Starcraft Broodwar loses more and more ground to Starcraft II. A consequence of this is the fact that Iccup is slowly dying. Once a busy SC server, now it can only gather 700 — 1200 players. Most of these players are Koreans, which are very very good from the start, and the others are also mostly gosu players. No, Iccup is not a friendly place for a newbie, especially now in its late days, when only the skilled remain.
Which brings us to the issue at hand. I've be
